Trouble sending email to text message
« on: April 17, 2014, 10:39:59 pm »
I've never run into this before with other email clients. I'm trying to have the program send an email message to xxx-xxx-xxxx@vtext.com (to my Verizon mobile phone). But I get a prompt when trying the test email that says "ERROR: [98.225.76.125]:4453 is currently not permitted to relay through this server."

Anyone know what's going on? And what I can do about it?

An  instant text message is way preferred over an email message, which only comes through as often as I set my phone to refresh its inbox. AND I'm not sure if I can get my phone to discriminate and notify me ONLY for a silence alert email message (vs. any other email that comes in).

Thanks,

Dave

Can you send email to another address? I think this error has nothing to do with the vtext.com, it's a message from the SMTP server. Use another SMTP server, like the one available from google mail.

Yes, I can send email to my regular email address, but when sending to the vtext.com address through the same smtp server, I get the prompt. That's what's got me scratching my head. Any ideas?

The four-digit number following the colon (port number?) in that prompt increments by one each time I rerun the test send, if that's useful information.

I, too, don't understand why the server is forbidden using one email address and not the other. I can send to that same vtext.com address from my regular email client (Thunderbird), which uses the same smtp server as I have setup in Silence Detector.

I'd be interested to see if anyone else can set up Silence Detector to send to a vtext.com (verizon wireless email-to-text-message) address.

I think it's caused by some non-standard hard restriction due to SPAM on the vtext.com side. There may be a difference in the email header or other difference that causes the vtext.com to reject the message. You may try to send the message to your regular email and add a forwarding rule here to vtext.com.

Great idea. I tried to think of some solution like that, but my brain was just not rising to the challenge.  :P

Interesting theory about why it's happening, too.

Thanks so much,

Just set up the auto-forward to send me a text. Works like a charm. I get a text within ten seconds of dead air.

Thanks, again!  8)

I'm having the same problem. I can send an email to myself (where to and from are the same address) but if I change the email to anything else I get the "not permitted to relay through this server" error.

check and unchecked the "requires authentication" and "SSL" options hitting test each time.
mine seems to work with only "requires auth" checked.

kylelmartin: This has probably nothing to do with the silence detector. It is a restriction of the smtp server.

I've tried both google's smtp & the one for my own site, but neither work and the Silence Detector crashes every time I hit TEST.

OK - as everyone was kinda saying, I had to go to my email host provider, get the IP address of my shared server and then add the supported port on the end which was 26. ##.###.###.##:26

My host, bluehost supports both SSL and non-SSL connections, but they use different server names and ports.

Uncheck the SSL if you're not using an SSL server.

OK - I've fixed this again.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Dave, are you saying you had pira send you an email and then from your email client, you forwarded it to your phone?

Or were you able to get pira to send you a text message directly?
and if so, how?

Thanks for taking the time to share the details.
