Turn off the 8 character PS
« on: November 19, 2018, 10:41:44 pm »
Hey everyone,

Is there a way to turn off or disable the 8 character Program Service (PS) to be displayed.  My encoder software is doing the rotation and includes the name.  Didn't know if this was a setting in the display string or an option in a future firmware update.

You can turn it off by removing symbol '0' from the Group Sequence. This turns off also following services: TA, DI, MS, AF. The reason is that PS shares the same group type with these services so cannot be turned off separately. This is given by the RDS standard. Note that the Group sequence cannot be empty (this yields in transmission of groups 0A), there still must be some groups on the RDS output, as defined in the RDS standard.

However I do not recommend that solution. If it is really necessary to encode all RDS groups outside the RDS encoder, you need to synchronize your groups with the RDS stream. Time base for the RDS stream is the pilot tone from stereo encoder. Thus you need to fill the RDS encoder's internal buffer and poll for the buffer status. Also, you should keep the symbol '0' in the group sequence so the RDS encoder would generate the PS internally in the case of external driving failure.

The task is not trivial but still can be realized with the P132 family RDS encoders. It would be nice if you can provide more details about what you're doing.

Hey Jan,

I use Arctic Palm, now DTS, to send the song title and artist to the RT and DPS for display on the RDS.  I throw the PS on there as well with my software so it's almost a double information thing.  I'm just wanting more time to display the song\title information.  I'm in the US so I didn't know if that made a difference.  I know the one in the state and the one Europe are different.  I hope this helps.

OK, now I understand that completely disabling the PS is not the right option for you as you still need to encode the 0A groups internally. What other disabling options are available?

  • Disable the Static PS
May be useful in situations where the station name is already a part of the dynamic PS text provided by the broadcast automation system.
This can be done by setting Static PS Period to 0 (zero).

  • Disable the Dynamic PS
For use with broadcast automation systems which send all texts as a sequence of separate PS windows.
Use appropriate option in the Text Setup to disable the Dynamic PS.

Related ASCII commands are: SPSPER=, DPS1EN=, DPS2EN=

There is no difference between US R.B.D.S. and European RDS which may apply.

Is this done in the string sequence in the web GUI or is this a command that is sent to the encoder.

These options are configurable in Text Setup.
