The interface is parallel but the software allows to drive it from serial port as well. The port must be however on-board.

I think the interface is not parallel but serial, as I am using a serial to USB adaptor. However, I will consider buying the newer product you mention.

Seems to be the 15 years old unit with parallel interface which requires hardware port for setup.

Operation with USB adapter is not guaranteed and will probably fail with most adapters.
For static data setup, I recommend to use the old PC. For sending dynamic data, consider some of the actual models, like the P232.

I have an old pira RDS encoder (without model indication, picture attached). It works fine on my  old Windows XP PC. Now need to use it in Windows 7, running under parallel desktop on my Mac mini. The encoder is recognized (under COM 3) but when I send data I get the following error: Error: Unable to send data! I am using an USB to Serial adaptor (on both PC's). Any suggestions?
