It’s not broadcasting correctly again! (PR article)

It’s been nothing but a carrier wave for two weeks! When are you going to fix it? The audio level is so loud it’s ear-splitting! These are exactly the kinds of messages no one wants to receive. Especially when a problem at a remote FM transmitter has persisted for some time, and an earful from angry listeners is effectively the only way to find out about it.

So, let’s look at how to detect a potential fault yourself in just a few minutes, without breaking the radio station's budget. The P275E FM Monitor+ device, which we will briefly describe here, was created in response to the needs of smaller FM broadcasters. It is a compact redesign of an existing measurement device — one that is likely already familiar, given our long-standing support for measurement and monitoring; it is our sincere goal to ensure that FM broadcasts meet relevant standards and are perceived positively by listeners.

A new Ethernet module and modified firmware enable not only remote connectivity but also a new, fully autonomous operating mode, which includes:

  • a set of configurable alarms with adjustable threshold values,
  • a programmable sequence of frequencies to be monitored,
  • the sending of email alerts and daily reports.

In practical terms, this means a single device can monitor all frequencies at a given transmission site. The one-time acquisition cost can be kept under $600 — significantly lower than potential regulatory fines or revenue lost from unbroadcast advertisements. The device operates independently, requiring neither a PC nor a public IP address. All that is needed is an email account accessible via the secure SMTP protocol, which is the current standard. At the same time, all standard functions have been retained, including remote connectivity via FM Scope or RDS Spy software, data collection using custom scripts, etc. Technical support directly from the Czech manufacturer is another significant benefit.

Email alerts were chosen as an alternative to complex corporate monitoring systems based on the SNMP protocol; while those systems offer endless possibilities, they also come at an endless cost. In contrast, email communication is straightforward and widely used; an undeniable advantage is that it does not depend on any specific service provider. Publicly available services can be used to redirect messages to other communication platforms if necessary.

The device is designed for maximum reliability. It is housed in an aluminum enclosure, powered by two cascaded internal voltage regulators, and features surge protection for critical circuits. At its core is a DSP processor designed for industrial applications, offering high immunity to interference. A built-in watchdog timer is a standard feature. The internal measurement card's firmware has been under continuous development for over 15 years; it is written entirely in assembly language without the use of third-party components. This ensures not only efficient processing and rapid response times but also deterministic behavior.
