TinyRDS / MagicRDS on Linux
« on: December 05, 2024, 07:47:20 am »
Hi from New Zealand.
I'm a long term radio hobbyist since 2006.  I've been searching and it seems there is no linux version of TinyRDS or MagicRDS and it is only available for Windows?

I am setting up a Raspberry Pi with OpenOB for linking (full duplex) and hoping I can somehow control the RDS board via the Pi itself.
There's always the possibility of running it under WINE I guess, has anyone had success with doing this?  My RDS board is controlled over USB and is from Engima in the UK.

Thanks,
Grant

Hi Grant,

I've (probably) the same RDS board from Enigma and am facing the same issue. So far I have not been able to connect to the board using TinyRDS under Wine, even after a wine regedit mod for setting COM3 up to /dev/ttyUSB0.

So far I have not tried MagicRDS yet, will see if that will bring any luck.

Despite of my age (60) I am quite new to Linux as well, so that doesn't help either. With my W10/Ubuntu dual boot computer in W10 mode I can use the RDS board fine with TinyRDS, but I would like to have it running in Ubuntu as well as I am gradually changing over from Windows to Linux.

Cheers,
Alex

Well, I've got some more info. I installed Magic RDS using Wine on Ubuntu. The connections I set up was USB with a baudrate of 19200 and voila... it worked.

Being optimistic I shutdown MagicRDS and started TinyRDS again, setting the same com port and that works as well. I don't know what changed, but I can now confirm that both programs are usable in ubuntu when a registry entry is made with wine for COM3 mapping to /dev/ttyUSB0.

Great, no need to boot up W10 for this anymore :)
